スクラッグスの教則本では「type A」となっていますが、近年はスクラッグス自身「type B」や「TTMTMTMT」で弾いているとインタビュー記事で答えていました。
なので私も、比較的弾きやすい「type B」の指使いでノープロブレム...で弾いていました。
ところが、最新のスクラッグスの演奏映像である以下の動画を観てみると、はっきりと「type A」で弾いているのが見て取れます。
（54秒あたりとか...）

やっぱり「type A」で弾いてたんやがなぁ！！！
それ以降私が、弾きにくい「type A」の指使いを今頃になって練習し出したのは言うまでもありません(-_-)/~
これと同様な問題が以下のフレーズでも存在します。

マーサホワイト・ショーのDVDを観ても、スクラッグスは「type A」で弾いていることは明らかですね。
さて、気になるには（私だけ？）他の著名な本場のバンジョー演奏家は、どちらの指使いで演奏しているのだろうと言うことです。
早速、私が連絡の取れるバンジョー弾き数名さんに以下のとおり問い合わせてみました。

先程の日記をアップしてる間に、早くもBill Evans氏より答えが返ってきました。
それも、ほぼ解決編ともいえる解説まで付けてくれてます。

For phrase no. 1, Earl Scruggs, Sonny Osborne and J. D. Crowe would
play it as type A.
For phrase no. 2, they would play it as type A.
I would also play it this way because I enjoy playing these licks in
the same way as they played them.
However, I believe that you should try it both ways and use the method
that is easiest for you. With both of these examples, type A is not
necessarily the easiest way to play these licks. But they get the
right kind of sound, in my humble opinion.

in phrase #1, type A is more what I would do. In phrase #2, type B is more what I would do. Of course, for you or anyone else, it's best to play it with the fingers that feel the most comfortable for you.

スクラッグス・スタイル以外にレノ・スタイル（シングルストリング・スタイル）を使う人には、どちらのフレーズもtype Bの方が自然なのは間違いないですよね。
さて、前述のとおりDavid Talbot氏はドリー・パートンとのツアーで多忙な日々を送っている模様です。
2週間ほどのオフの後、ハリウッドに飛んで、9月の半ばにはいくつかのテレビショーの仕事をこなすそうです。
そんな彼がブルーグラスのフィールドに戻ってくるのは、果たしていつの日のことでしょうか...

さて、最近のChief banjoでは、トーンリングを標準のBlaylockから巷で話題のDannickに変更するサービス（但し新品の注文のみ）を行っているようですが、両リングについての感想を聞いてみました。

In answer to your question about the Dannick ring. If you prefer a sharper, brighter sound, such as an RB4.. the Dannick would serve you well. However the Blaylock produces a tone more like my Granada.
They are both great tone rings.

昨日、Sonnyから「I made a mistake in the hammer on notes...actually the proper frets for the hammer on would be 3-4 on the third string instead of 1-2.」ってメールが入ってました。
やはりGコードのつもりだったようです。

I apologize for taking so long to answer your questions - I use many different right hand fingerings depending on what kind of tone I want to produce. So my answer to your 4 questions is this: depending upon the situation, I have played both phrase no. 1 and phrase no. 2 using both type A and type B rolls - all depending upon what kind of sound I was choosing to produce at that time. In phrase no. 1, type A, I play like that when I rest the palm of my right hand on the banjo head and pick the strings near where the neck joins the head, far away from the bridge.

In phrase no. 1, type B, I play like that when I have my fingers anchored normally and usually pick the strings at the normal position where I play my lead breaks about 2 inches from the bridge.

In phrase no. 2, type A, I play like that when I want to play the bouncy Earl Scruggs sound on the lick, which is the way I play that lick almost always.

私も最近お気に入りの渋〜いプレーヤーをひとり紹介させていただきます。
Eric Ellis（エリック・エリス）
ノースカロライナ州Wilkesboro在住の50歳、プロのミュージシャンですが生業はトラックドライバーと言うところがまた渋いでしょう(^^;
ジョージア州のバンジョーチャンピオンという経歴を持つ彼は、70年代から80年代にかけて「Tony and Wyatt Rice」「Jimmy Gaudreau」「Wells Fargo Band」そして「Wes Golden & Surefire」などのバンドに在籍しました。
最近は「Bobby Hicks & Hazel Creek」や「David Peterson & 1946」に参加しています。
また彼は、ブルーグラスの歴史に関する知識も豊富で、Appalachian州立大学で教鞭を執ったりもしています。
彼の演奏はスクラッグス・スタイルが中心となりますが、その正確無比な右手のコントロールに加えて、左手の指板を抑える圧力の強さが、バンジョーから奏でられるしっかりとした音から窺い知れますね。
さて、彼の愛器は「1938 Gibson TB-11 conversion」で、ネックはFrank Neat作によるcurly maple製の、インレイはRB-3 Wreath inlay patternです。
なんと言っても特筆すべきは「The tone ring is supposed to be a late 1930's Gibson, so I've been told」（ご本人曰く）なんだそうな。
以下のYouTubeのビデオクリップでも、なんともえ〜音を出してますが、彼のテクニックもさることながら、やっぱりえ〜楽器弾いてるんですなぁ...(-_-)/~
でも、Prewarのトーンリングだけって、なんで手に入るんでしょうか？？？

私がここで紹介したからと言うわけではないでしょうが、Eric Ellis氏が、Ralph and Carter StanleyやMike Seegerらと共にNorth Carolina州のBlue Ridge Music Hall of Fame（音楽栄誉殿堂）入りを果たしたそうです。
